Message from Dr. Rich

Dear California Participant in the STS National Database:

At the request of the California Society of Thoracic Surgeons (CASTS), STS is developing a California Regional Report that will include risk-adjusted outcomes for coronary bypass grafting surgery, valve procedures, and combined procedures from 2007 to 2011.

Regional collaboration is a very proactive way for cardiothoracic surgeons to utilize the Database and improve the care of their patients. The STS National Database plays a valuable role in many successful regional quality improvement programs across the country. CASTS plans to use the California Regional Report to share processes and practices that will help reduce variability in outcomes.

For the report, data submitted by California participants to the Duke Clinical Research Institute will be aggregated by hospital, so in order to make this report as effective as possible, I urge you to complete the consent form linked here and return it as soon as possible to Gerry Tarafa, STS National Database Operations Manager, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Gerry is also available to answer any questions you may have about the project.

I am pleased to support CASTS in this endeavor. I believe that reports like this are in the best interest of patients, hospitals, surgeons, and payers.

I thank you for participating in the STS National Database and encourage you to join your colleagues in this important initiative for your region.
